Excellent air cleaner, powerful and reliable, Definitely comparable to similarly priced air cleaners
Winix Air Cleaner does an excellent job of cleaning the air. I own a smaller Winix cleaner and that one is still working. This Winix Model U450 is a large unit. It measures 26' H x 19" W x 11" D. There's a handle in the back to allow for carrying, but it is kind of a heavy unit for an air cleaner at about 15 to 18 lbs. The power cord is 6.5 feet long, two prong plug. Compared to my older model, the Winix PlasmaWave 5300, which I bought four years ago, this U450 model is bigger in size, nearly double. The air vents are about 1" wide and cover the entire sides from top to bottom. The air outlet grid is bigger too. The CADR is roughly 300 to 340 for smoke/dust/pollen. And for the amount of air moved, it has a rating of 300 CFM. This unit is excellent at cleaning the air. I own a less expensive Winix 5300 and a similarly priced Rabbit Air cleaner and this U450 model does a great job of cleaning the air all day long, and instantly if necessary.

5-Stage Air Cleaning Process
Clean Air Perfected!

The U450 is the largest and most powerful air cleaner Winix makes, and is designed for optimal use for a family room or high performance in multiple rooms. Featuring a 5-Stage Air Cleaning System, the U450 uses Washable Pre-Filter to large particles like hair, lint and pet fur-helping to extend the life of the HEPA Filter and reduce housekeeping; we treat the filter with cleancel anti-microbial coating that prevents the growth of odor causing organisms. The 99.99% efficient True-HEPA Filter then captures the particles you can’t even see, including pet dander, smoke, pollen and mold spores. The air then passes through our Advanced Odor Control (AOC) Washable Activated Carbon filter that traps and absorbs the strongest odors produced from cooking, pets and ammonia. Winix’s own PlasmaWave Technology then safely breaks apart odors, chemical vapors and other pollutants at the molecular level to offer superior all-around air cleaning-without producing any harmful ozone.

An Auto Mode and Air Quality Sensor combine to deliver Set-and-Forget convenience and optimal performance; 4 Fan Speeds; Sleep Mode; Remote Control. Energy Star Qualified; AHAM Room Size Rating 450 sq ft

PlasmaWave Technology
Winix's PlasmaWave Technology

PlasmaWave Technology; safely breaks apart Odors, Allergens, Chemical Vapors and other Indoor Pollutants at a molecular level without producing harmful Ozone. PlasmaWave creates Positive and Negative ions that combine with natural water vapor to form hydroxyls. Hydroxyls instantly neutralize viruses, bacteria, chemical vapors, odors and gases in the air by breaking apart their molecular structure into water vapor and other harmless air molecules. This entire process is similar to what happens in the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere. PlasmaWave emulates the way nature cleans the air.

After a few days use, I've found the following:

1. High or Turbo mode can produce a noticeable whistling or howling
2. Due to the design of the top vent, there's a noticeable fluttering sound due to the way the air exits the vent.
3. The PlasmaWave sound is very slight and sounds more like a ticking/clicking sound
4. When the PlasmaWave is on, the fan speeds up and down and doesn't maintain constant revolutions at a given speed.
5. Turning the unit on auto mode, which defaults to fan on quiet, seems a bit problematic. In this mode, the unit only senses contaminants in the immediate vicinity and usually shows the air quality is "Good". But turn the fan on medium or high, and pull in more air, and now the unit says the air quality is "poor".
