The air purification industry is full of smoke and mirrors. Companies attempt to deceive consumers who don't understand the products they are buying, and Alen is doing so with the T500.

The T500 is referred to as a "HEPA Tower Air Purifier" when in fact it does not have a HEPA grade filter in it. I spoke with a representative at Alen Corp. this morning and asked them if the product has a HEPA grade filter in it. Their customer service person stated that it did. I asked them why their web site suggests that it only captures "up to 95%" of particles at .3 microns. He told me it uses a "HEPA type" filter, which is less efficient than HEPA. I asked him what "HEPA type" means, and he said it is similar to a HEPA filter. In reality, "HEPA Type" is a term that marketing people in the air purification industry made up. What it really means is "Not really a HEPA filter but if we throw the HEPA acronym in the title, our customers won't know the difference".

Good Choice for Air Cleaner
I purchased several of these for both me and my daughter to use in bedrooms. They are extremely quiet at low speed and therefore do not interfere with sleep. At higher speeds they can be noisy but not ridiculously so. They do work well to refresh the air and clean it as well. I have to preface that with the fact that we both have the latest available technology on our air handlers to disinfect and clean the air and these units are in addition to that. We all have allergies and sensitivity to odors and allergens and these bump up the efficiency of our central air systems. I ran two of them around the clock after the flu and stomach virus hit and felt that they did an excellent job in cleaning the air. I cannot speak to these being used as stand alone purifiers but I am extremely satisfied and have purchased 6 of them so far and would purchase again.
