Holmes HAP8650B-U I received my Holmes 4 weeks ago and it has been on nearly 24 hours a day since. Knock on wood, so far it has been working perfectly. Some people have complained about noise factor. I think it is unlikely that you can have an air movement device with the motor and fan blade in the same room and not hear it. A home central air unit is usually in the garage, closet or attic, therefore your not likely to hear the noise from the motor and fan and the air from it comes into you room by ductwork. Nice and quite. Even on high speed I feel that the Holmes is quite enough for the amount of air that it moves through it. I place the unit in our bedroom at night and set the speed on 2 or 3 and don't notice it being on. yes you can hear it, but it is moving air, all from one unit. The filters in it look like they should stop the smallest of particles. I am very well pleased with the Holmes so far but I am aware that it is made in China. I just hope that I stay satisfied.

It's interesting that there are 3 settings on this thing - germ, general clean, and allergen. Not sure how a simple fan with filters will work differently with 3 different settings. This machine is basically an air mover or a fan with filters. Dirty air goes in and clean air comes out. There is a "Turbo" setting which just means the fan is on high speed. I like the timer feature 2, 4, 8 hours setting. Even running on turbo it's not that loud. Sound is similar to what you get from a fan on high speed.

The fan is very quiet even on high speed. Unfortunately it has a droning whine that is present whenever it is on. I can hear it from three rooms away. This is the third large room purifier I have tried that has failed the sound test. I'll be returning it to Target at my earliest opportunity.

After 2 other Air Purifiers, this one is the real deal. Tried to save money and got an Ion air purifier. It was alright but I decided to upgrade last year to a top of the line Ion one. I had bought Ion since that is what my mother used to use. Never heard of Hepa Air Purifiers. I could only tolerate my Ion air filter to be on for so long. It did something very uncomfortable to the air. Didn't like the way I was breathing with it on. Did some research and found out about HEPA, Carbon, and UV air purifiers. Carbon being more for smoke and chemical vapors, I decided I wanted more of the HEPA and UV style with their concentration of viruses, bacteria, and mold. Well unbeknownst to me this tower had both! UV and HEPA. So I turned it on in my living room and it was amazing. The effect was pretty quick (when set to high power filtration) and then I put it in my room to sleep.
