It's a synthetic material. RECOMMENDED I wanted to replace my previous Honeywell which was a MERV 13. I have a dog which sheds a lot and dust was still filtering through. This is MERV 11 filter and ( I do not have any scientific basis to prove this) I feel it is a bit more efficient than the previous one. The HW one was made of cotton-ish material but this one is completely synthetic - hence it feels a little less dusty even though it's MERV rating is lower.. Maybe that's the reason. It did cost more that the HW though.

You may want to buy locally to avoid problems. I bought 2 filters - one did not have the foam strips on it that ensure a snug fit in the filter compartment. The box it was packaged in was not padded either so both filters were slightly damaged. The filter itself is fine but you may be better off buying it locally so you can ensure it is a quality product and is not damaged.
