I looked at the cheap replacement filter and a piece of new OEM filter I had through a microscope and the replacement filter is just very thin strands of plastic with no sign of anything that might be charcoal particles. The OEM filter is much more substantial and has what appears to be coating on the fibers. The replacement filters also have a slight musty odor to them kind of like dirty socks, unlike the OEM filters I have had which left the room smelling fresh and clean. The replacement filters left the room smelling worse than before I installed it, even after 24 hours of use. I think these replacements are not much more than cheap black foam.
