Excellent
I bought this to deal with cat litter dust in a small apartment. I was hesitant to purchase this due to the high price and bad past experiences with other air cleaner products (noisy, poor quality) years ago, but have had good experiences with Sharp plasmacluster technology built-in to late-model Toyota/Lexus vehicles, so I decided to take a chance. The unit is very stylish (more-so than the pictures would indicate) and seems well constructed. It's assembled in China by Sharp.

The fan is very quiet on the lowest setting, which was important to me as the unit will run continuously. The electronic dust sensor is phenomenal. It really does detect dust in the air that's too small to see. I have the machine 6 feet from my cat's litter box, and within a minute of my cleaning the cat's mess from the litter box, the Sharp's sensor display changes from green to orange and then red, and the fan kicks into high gear. After a few minutes of cleaning the air, the display returns...

The Sharp KC-860U Plasmacluster Air Purifier with Humidifying Function purifies a room up to 347 square feet. It offers a unique combination of air treatment technologies to make you and your family more comfortable, whatever the season. Bacteria, germs, mold spores, pollen, pet dander, smoke, dust and odors can make breathing harder, especially for asthma and allergy sufferers. Sharp's KC-860U Plasmacluster air purifier helps remove these irritants with an ultra quiet fan that draws air through a 3-stage filter system. This filter system plus the revolutionary Plasmacluster Ion Technology for air purifiers makes the air healthier and cleaner smelling. For an even more comfortable environment, sensors constantly monitor the air quality in your room, adjusting the fan for air purity while providing the optimum humidity level. This combination of features is a smart way to choose cleaner, healthier, more breathable air.
nice unit; consider the fp-a80uw also
I recently evaluated this unit and the Sharp FP-A80UW before buying several more FP-A80UW's. I selected the FP-A80 because of value. It offers a good combination of an activated carbon element, a pleated filter, and a 'plasmacluster' ion generator. It doesn't incorporate a high-maintenance humidifier and it offers a good flow-rate for the respective noise levels. I also have an IQ Air Health Pro Plus, to which I can compare this Sharp unit.

The most important thing to understand is that this is a bedroom size unit that will do a good job in a typical suburban house bedroom -- certainly not a whole house.

The activated carbon element in this unit is light and although it's nice to have, you will probably realize a significant benefit from a filter with a much larger carbon load. The IQ Air GC series is a good example, but costly. The "V5" unit the the Health Pro Plus is good for a room, but it's a significantly larger and more noisy than this Sharp unit...
