If you take a vacuum brush and sweep the HEPA filters off every month or so then you can really make them last several times longer. I would use your common sense to tell you when to replace the filter. If it's caked with dirt that won't sweep off then it's probably past its useful life. If it still looks nice and clean for the most part then don't replace it. Most manuals will tell you to replace the filter every 6 - 12 months but you can usually use them for a couple years if you take care of them. I probably have a lot more...
