In my experience, MERV 8 filters provide sufficient filtration: there is noticeably less dust visible on surfaces in the house and we don't have to perform dusting anywhere near as frequently as we did before installing the new filter system. Whenever I change the filter I always inspect the A/C evaporator coil with a mirror and flashlight and the coil appears just as clean as the day it was new. This tells me the filter is doing its job and doesn't allow air to leak around it in the filter housing. At replacement time, there is always a tremendous amount of junk visible in the filter and it's satisfying to know this is being removed from the air...
