I also find that if you install the thicker filters with the higher MERV number that they do filter out more dust and particles but they ALSO restrict air flow in your furnace! Restricted air flow (at higher pressures) can cause your electronic furnace to sense an obstruction and then shut down! Now you have a potential costly diagnosis/repair bill from your local HVAC company. That might be a reason they install the filters with the higher MERV number hoping to get another billable service call out of you!! As always in life, buyer beware!
