Makes you wonder where it was made and if is a true HEPA filter. Was I ripped off?

The aftermarket filters are certainly cheaper, by approximately $20, and seem to work fine, but are of significantly inferior construction. This filter has a sturdy plastic frame with a caulked edge, rather than a cardboard frame with no caulking. The filter media in the Whirlpool filter is also much stiffer than the aftermarket media and does not flex when installing the filter. Does this ultimately matter? I suppose the true test would be to use some sort of complicated particle counter to test filter efficiency, but absent that, I can say that the additional $18 does seem to provide a better product. Air filters provide, among other things, piece of mind, and the sturdier construction factors into that.
