smaller than they used to be?
I've owned a few Holmes air purifiers over the last ten years and their effectiveness is immediately evidenced by all the dust, particles and cat hair that get trapped in these carbon prefilters. However, this time around I noticed something that I'm almost positive was not the case before...the carbon prefilters do NOT entirely cover the HEPA filter. This will allow particles to enter the HEPA filter on the edges and surely decrease the useful life of the (more expensive) HEPA filters. These are GENUINE Holmes prefilters, they should NOT leave a gap around the edge of the HEPA filter. The gap isn't HUGE, but there is a gap. This is a big disappointment to me.

An added level of filtration

Whether you want to alleviate foul odors, or you are concerned about air contaminants that you cannot smell, but might still be in your indoor air, a Carbon Filter is great added level of filtration to deliver better air quality.

Remove up to 99.97% of airborne particles

Carbon filters actually have small absorbent pores that trap and filter the air of contaminants such as smoke and odors. These Carbon replacement filters are quite often used in conjunction with Primary Air filters to purify indoor air environments. You will appreciate the fact that your carbon filter will remove up to 99.97% of airborne particles in your or home or office by absorbing odors that may come from pets, garbage, bathrooms, smoke, litter boxes or cooking.

Also referred to as "HOLMES type C" prefilters...
These are getting tough to find locally -- it used to be I could walk into Sears and walk out with a box, but now they're only interested in selling me the more expensive "type B" HEPA filters that these carbon filters fit over.

There are four of these per box, yet only three are needed per change in our Holmes HAP 650 purifier. The purifier is in use in a converted basement bedroom in the house -- it has a moisture control problem, we have the diaper changing table in there, and we own dogs. The evidence is clear every time we change these filters. Not only is there a lot of dust, dander, pet hair and whatever collected in these, but the smell of the room becomes noticeably improved every filter change.

The main function of these filters is to keep the more expensive HEPA filter beneath Holmes HAPF600D from getting clogged. They can be rinsed out under the faucet, by the way, if you don't...
Could Be Cheaper
The actual Holmes air filter wasn't a bad price, but the HEPA and Carbon Filters are WAY expensive. There's absolutely NO reason why a couple sheets of carbon should be $14 or HEPA replacements $24 and up. A complete replacement of all 3 HEPAs and Carbon Filters will run you $200!

A third party manufacturer needs to undercut these ridiculous OEM replacement prices. Replacing everything every 6 months like recommended is outrageously more expensive than the filter.

That said, the Holmes HEPA filter does a great job of clearing out the air in a room. I suppose that comes with a STEEP price.
