You simply slide out the old filter, put this one in it's place, and plug it in. It seems sturdy and well made. I had originally used a large high voltage electronic air cleaner but did not like it. Washing it was a pain and the metal grids eventually got damaged which caused arcing. I didn't feel it actually did a great job at cleaning the air. For the past 4 years, I had been using a washable filter but it would take months to get dirty so I doubt it was doing that great of a job.
