A solid performer with affordable operating costs
I'd give the Airpura R600 a 4.5 star rating if I was permitted to use fractional values. At a list price of $600 the Airpura R600 competes in the premium air purifier market with competitors such as IQair, Blueair, Airgle, and a few other manufacturers. The R600 employs three filters: a prefilter than lasts ~1 year and costs ~$35 for a pack of 2, a high grade HEPA filter that lists for $170 and lasts for ~5 years, and an 18 lb activated carbon filter that lists for $200 and lasts ~2 years. At list prices, the cost of filters averages $151.50/ year, but the carbon filter is refillable which allows those willing to go through extra effort to shave a bit off the cost (18 lbs of activated carbon will run in the ballpark of $120). This makes the operating costs of the R600 pretty reasonable compared to its competition; for example, a Blueair 650E has filter costs of $300/year (if using the smokestop filters). Moreover, the included filters, except for the cheap prefilter, will not need...

Great
Works great, really scrubs the air nicely. Has a nice solid hum. Needs to be on medium to really start pushing some air. Seriously fresh air.
Good but restricted airflow
Works great, really scrubs the air nicely. Has a nice solid hum. Needs to be on medium to really start pushing some air. Seriously fresh air.

PROS:
top quality materials, filters, construction.
serious air-washing w/ 18 pds carbon makes the air smell awesomely fresh.
durable and easy to move around.

CONS:
R600 has gotten very expensive. The Health Pro Plus (I.Q. air) is a much better option near that price.
Filters are so tight that it restricts airflow. Needs to move much more air to be worth its price tag.
It's clunky to take apart and clean.

CONCLUSION: The R600 is good for small rooms, like a small bedroom, or to control smells in one small part of a house. A a particle filter machine, there are many better, cheaper options, like the Sharp Plasmacluster, which is an Energy Star and which moves lots of air. Airpura needs to redesign this thing to have better airflow. It doesn't matter how long the filters last...
